Page load speed is one of the biggest influences on on-site SEO. 1 in 4 visitors will abandon a website if it takes longer than 4 seconds to load, this in turn increases your bounce rate. Bounce rate is an indicator to Google that visitors are not engaging with the content on your webpage and have simply visited the homepage and left. For one page sites this is normal, but for websites with multiple pages this is a percentage you need to keep low. 56% is considered a high bounce rate and the optimal range would be between 26-40%.
So how do you improve your page speed? There's a number of ways and each varies from website to website, but to get the best indicator you can perform a site speed audit using a tool like Google PageSpeed Insights.
This tool will give you a good idea of ways to improve, and even gives you a guide on how to fix certain elements. Obviously some of these suggestions are more technical than others and may not be any use to a business owner or marketing manager that aren't involved directly with their website maintenance, but it's a good idea to check this and discuss the results with your web developer.
When someone enters a query on a search engine such as "dentists bahrain", Google will display a result that it thinks is the closest match. After all, Google is a business that's providing a service and it wants to give its users the best possible results. Simply put, it will display a list of DENTISTS in BAHRAIN. The order in which these are displayed is based on their SEO ranking and there are a huge number of factors that affect this that we won't go into in this article. The way a page begins ranking for these keywords (dentists bahrain) is producing content (a page or blog post) on their website that Google will pick up and add to the list.
Ranking for keywords takes time, depending on your Domain Authority this can take anywhere from 6-12 months for brand new websites.
Heading tags tell a web browser how to display a page's content. A H1 being the most important and usually at the top of page, down to a H6 for the least important titles and headings. I'd say at least 70% of small business websites I've visited recently haven't optimised their images, resulting in over 10s page load times. Quite simply, before any image is uploaded to your website, compress them. There's a number of free image compressors on Google that take less than 2 minutes to use so there's no excuse to avoid this one!
Another quick and easy tip, once you've uploaded your compressed image, make sure to add Alt Text to an image. This text should describe what the image is displaying, like in the image below.
Up to 50% of web traffic worldwide in 2020 was done through a mobile device. This is huge for websites that haven't been developed responsively and optimised for mobile devices. Often overlooked by small business owners, it's important that you check how your website displays on different devices such as desktop, tablet and mobile. Fortunately most website builders now do this automatically, but adjustments will have to be made to certain elements to ensure they display correctly. Websites that haven't been updated in the last 10 years usually show a minimised version of the desktop display, making it impossible to click on links or read any of the information.
Meta titles and meta descriptions are what show up for a web page when displayed on search engines. Making sure you have text that is related to your keywords will have a good impact on your rankings. This can easily be adjusted from your page's admin panel. A page url is the text that shows in your search bar when on a certain page, such as https://www.thedigitalengineers.co/website-design. This gives search engines a general idea of the content of your page. It's also worth noting that URLs that are too long and over 74 characters will appear truncated and cut off, so it's best to keep them short and to the point to increase your click through rate.
Internal links on a website is when a certain line or word of text links to another page within your website. When one web page links to another page on a website, this indicates to search engines that the page contains high quality content. This is the same for external links known as 'backlinking'. Backlinking is a lot harder to manage and isn't considered on-site SEO so we won't go into it in this article.
Link value is passed around between pages. Usually a website homepage will have the highest link value because it has the most backlinks. That link value will then be shared between all the links found on that homepage and so on.
